SR-71 - based on alien tech? :-D

How can you bring my beloved Lockheed into this?? The best aircraft ever built is the SR-71. So far ahead of its time it that it literally spawned like 20 aircraft based on it and the principles involved in building it... The Stealth Fighter / Bomber come to mind as examples

Exactly - born from alien tech (some say direct from reverse engineering the roswell incident) - to this day not a single aircraft has achived it's altitude or it's mach 3+ speed. ;)

Why was it so far ahead of it's time? why was it dropped? why so few made? why is some tech still classified? Makes ya think don't it? :-D

Well firstly the U2 has beaten it's altitude has it not? Even if it does look crap and need a truck to drive ahead of it on the runway to aid landing.

Secondly there is a program called 'Area 51: I was there' or something along those lines where they cover the building of the Blackbird along with many other things that were classified out there.

Did you know that Area 51 and the entire extraterrestrial craft crash was made up by the US government as a reason for the base to built out there and everything contained within to be highly classified?

It was so far ahead of its time simply because the engineers involved in the project were some of the best aerospace engineers in the world. If we took the best guys doing the same work now and put them together in a room with the ability to run wild, so long as it was buildable, I'm certain we would see some mire questionable things than the old SR.
It was dropped because it wasn't reliable enough at top speed and several crashed, killing the pilots. NASA still have their SR-71b which was used to train pilots in how to fly them correctly.
Not much of an SR can be classified still surely? At the age of 9 I sat in the cockpit of one at RIAT that year.

Yes, yes I have. I hope there is another one at the Air Tattoo sometime soon, before I move further away from the base.
